A hiking tour in Sayn in search of traces of knights and Romans can be made along the Traumpfad Saynsteig. The trail goes through shady forests along natural paths to impressive caves. Tranquil forest sections alternate with incredibly beautiful views far into the Rhine valley and the Eifel.

Safety information

In some passages surefootedness and a head for heights is required. This trail should not be hiked in icy conditions.

Safety guidance – stay safe whilst hiking on the Traumpfade/Traumpfädchen

Hikers like narrow pathways, unspoilt natural trails (leading over the forest floor, across the grass or alongside streams) and rocky climbs which lead to spectacular views. It goes without saying that particular care should be exercised when taking such routes.

Things to bear in mind when preparing for your hike

  • Wear proper clothing that is appropriate to the weather conditions and that will protect you against the cold and the wet or the heat and the sun.
  • Schedule suitable breaks during your hike and make sure that you conserve energy.
  • Take sufficient liquids with you. Establishments selling refreshments are not available everywhere.
  • When hiking on the Traumpfade, please wear appropriate hiking boots which provide a sufficient foothold on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you do not feel that you are able to negotiate certain parts of the route, then you should avoid such sections or else turn back. Natural pathways may become muddy and treacherous, especially in unfavourable weather.
  • In autumn in particular, please remember that leaves lying on the ground may be concealing bumps, routes, stones or holes in the path.
  • You will need to expect route impairments of this kind if you are intending to undertake a hike.
  • Before setting out, visit https://www.traumpfade.info/traumpfade/wege-status/ in order to find out whether the route you intend to hike is closed or whether diversions are in place. Construction works, timber felling or other disruptions may also be planned.
  • Recommended hiking season: April to October

Turn-by-turn directions

The start of this Traumpfad on the Rhine is Sayn Castle, opposite the royal castle park. If the car is not parked at the castle but at the abbey church the start can be reached via the Brexbachstraße. The trail goes over the castle’s terrace up to Syn Castle and, at the walls which are also worth seeing, there is already the first magnificent view. Continuing on straight ahead, the path leads to the Oscar heights. Here there are great views of the abbey church, the romantic “Ancient Sayn”, the Rhine valley and the Eifel. The Sayn Trail crosses the L306 and reaches the edge of the forest at the Ottilie heights. The way now goes down via a side valley to the Brexbach brook through a varied landscape of water meadows to the Boy Scouts’ camp. A narrow path now leads upwards and meets the Rheinsteig.

The trail continues uphill to the World Heritage Site Upper Germanic and Rhaethian Limes with a reconstructed Roman tower. Now the almost level path allows relaxation, the Meisenhof invites the hiker to stop. The path that now follows across open fields again allows great views over the Rhine valley. Then downwards to Sayn. From the footbridge over the Brexbach brook, past the mill museum Heinsmühle (Heins Mill) it is only a few steps back to the castle.

Question from Meli Frey · February 12, 2023 · Community

Also Hund geht auf jeden Fall!
