Safety information

Safety guidance – stay safe whilst hiking on the Traumpfade/Traumpfädchen

Hikers like narrow pathways, unspoilt natural trails (leading over the forest floor, across the grass or alongside streams) and rocky climbs which lead to spectacular views. It goes without saying that particular care should be exercised when taking such routes.

Things to bear in mind when preparing for your hike

  • Wear proper clothing that is appropriate to the weather conditions and that will protect you against the cold and the wet or the heat and the sun.
  • Schedule suitable breaks during your hike and make sure that you conserve energy.
  • Take sufficient liquids with you. Establishments selling refreshments are not available everywhere.
  • When hiking on the Traumpfade, please wear appropriate hiking boots which provide a sufficient foothold on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you do not feel that you are able to negotiate certain parts of the route, then you should avoid such sections or else turn back. Natural pathways may become muddy and treacherous, especially in unfavourable weather.
  • In autumn in particular, please remember that leaves lying on the ground may be concealing bumps, routes, stones or holes in the path.
  • You will need to expect route impairments of this kind if you are intending to undertake a hike.
  • Before setting out, visit https://www.traumpfade.info/traumpfaedchen/wege-status/ in order to find out whether the route you intend to hike is closed or whether diversions are in place. Construction works, timber felling or other disruptions may also be planned.
  • Recommended hiking season: April to October

Turn-by-turn directions

Our relaxing tour on the Traumpfädchen Paradiesweg Polch begins at the car park of the clubhouse of the Polch Gun Association. The best way of experiencing the long-distance views is to complete the trail in a clockwise direction. Leaving the clubhouse, we first proceed uphill through a small wood on an easily negotiable pathway. After a brief ascent, we find fields lining the route.

We arrive at the plateau surrounding the Blumenberg via a few twists and turns and are rewarded with good views of Kaan, one of the outlying districts of Polch. The route leads gently down to a side road. Once we have crossed this, variety is provided in the form of woodland and copses. Step by step, and with a number of changes of direction, our trail makes its way uphill. We are now set to explore the surroundings of Uhlenberg and Kuckertsberg using unspoilt natural trails throughout. This section of the Paradiesweg is characterised by superb panoramas of the Maifeld. Vast fields line the route, and our lines of sight are virtually unrestricted. The Abbey Church of Münstermaifeld makes a striking appearance, and the typical cone-shaped mountains of the East Eifel are clearly visible on the horizon. After 1.7 kilometres of the tour, these views can be enjoyed from the comfort of a curved lounger located on the edge of a slope (50 metre diversion from the route).

The crown of a gnarled tree situated right in the middle of the meadow landscape stretches up into the sky. A short while later, our route turns gently downhill. A rest area offers a further set of box seat views before we start our winding descent into the valley.

Once we arrive below, we encounter the further delights of the meadows and groves of the Polcher Bach. Rocks can occasionally be seen along the pathway, providing us with an insight into the ancient bedrock of the region. But our focus keeps returning to the small stream.

After 4.7 kilometres of the route, those who do not mind an additional climb may wish to make a 250-metre detour up to the Kolping Cross to enjoy the views from two benches located there. The copses finally give way as our Paradiesweg switches to the other side of the stream. We now head back towards Polch, again right across open fields. Two church towers loom up like landmarks.

Near Döller Mill, we cross the road to Kaan once more. We then stick closely to the stream (traversing it once) as we return to the clubhouse of the Gun Association, the original starting point of our enormously attractive 7.2-kilometre tour through a mini-paradise.
