Laacher Rundweg - Winter Hike
Wonderful winter hike around the largest volcanic lake in the Eifel with information boards on the volcanic history of the region. Other highlights include Maria Laach Abbey and the Lydia Tower.
Located in the east of the Volcanic Eifel, Lake Laach is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate. The lake is of volcanic origin and has already been voted the most popular lake in the state several times. This circular walk takes you around the lake and its nature reserve. After starting at the Hotel Waldfrieden, there is the option of taking a detour of just under 300 metres to visit the Bleiche Erde viewpoint. The trail then continues along the lakeshore. Several information boards provide interesting insights into the volcanic history of the region, and rising bubbles of carbon dioxide in the lake are impressive evidence of the volcanic origin. The Romanesque basilica of Maria Laach, built in 1093 not far from the shore, can be seen from afar and is definitely worth a visit. At the end of the tour, you can view the region from the air on the Lydia tower and, if visibility is good, see as far as the Siebengebirge mountains.
